Socks came to us back in 2000 as a stray. He had obviously been someones cat since he was already nuetered and declawed. He was very shy in the beginning. He would let us pet him, but wouldn’t come in the house. Finally, Winter approached and I coaxed him in. He stayed for 9 years. He went in and out for the first 7 years. I worried alot because I would rather have had him inside all the time. We adopted Shadow in 2001 as a friend for Socks. Over the years they became inseparable. In Sept. 2007 Socks had a few severe seizures. It was very scarey. After a long visit to the animal hospital and blood work, the cause of the seizure was unknown. Socks Vet decided he would do well on phenobarbital. We took his bloodwork every 6 months to make sure his liver function was okay. He had been a trooper for 2 years. Last week he started getting very lathargic and started throwing up. I had noticed a small bump on one side. I took him to the Vet and we soon discovered his kidneys were enlarged. He was immediately put on IV’s to try to flush the kidneys…….no luck. The size continued to grow nearly over night. He came home on Saturday, Sept. 5th and spent 5 hours with us. It was clear to me that my best friend was no longer able to put up a fight. The vet came to the house and we sat outside (his favorite place) and gave him his final shot. It was the hardest thing I have had to do as an adult. I tried to be strong for my children, but we all cried together. Socks had become my cat. He followed me everywhere and talked to me ALL the time! He had such a wonderful personalitiy. He is irreplacable! Shadow misses him terribly. I think that Socks bathed Shadow more than Shadow bathed himself. The void in our lives and in our hearts is huge. He will be dearly missed!
