Farewell my sweet Simba
Written by Gabrielle Crichton
My beautiful but certainly not little ginger tabby cat, Simba arrived July 2nd 2004 which was my birthday. I will never forget feeling so fidgety and restless in my seat as my father and i drove to the agreed meeting place. 2 days before the day I first met Simba, my father had surprised me with a tabby kitten only for it to run away on the same day. So I was feeling very disheartened that I managed to lose my kitten in that short amount of time so my father arranged for another kitten. I knew that when i first laid eyes on Simba he was the one. He didn’t come in a cage or a box, just came as he was. He was huge for a kitten but so very well behaved. The owner mentioned that he was very well disciplined by his mother and so he was already toilet trained. I couldn’t of careless if he wasn’t since he was already perfect in my eyes.

He was very social and friendly and never failed to greet anyone who walked in my house. He was also very vocal and answered back when he was called or wanted to express what he wanted. At first i thought it was annoying but I soon couldn’t resist his cries and pleas when I would open the fridge and grab the milk. I love but miss very much for when he would meet me at the gate when I would arrive home from school, when I would have to walk back home, with him in my arms, and tell him to stop following me but most of all just his presence. It’s funny, he never had to say anything nor buy me anything to comfort me. Just had to be there. The warmth from his body beside me as i would cry my eyes out was like a blanket to a baby. He was my protector and I soon came to realise that I wasn’t his owner but just his friend. Shadow (the kitten that had run away on me 2 days before we got Simba – well we found him stuck in our next door neighbours house XD) and Simba were inseparable. Shadow needed him as much as I need him. Simba taught Shadow everything a cat should know. From toilet training, fighting, climbing trees, hunting – you name it! During winter Simba would always position himself around Shadow to warm him and during thunder storms (shadow is terrified of it) Simba would call him and sit right next to him until the storm cleared.

Stray cats would often target Shadow since he wasn’t much of a fight and he was quite small for a cat, Simba would always be near to defend him. He was a great fighter and Shadow would always clean his wounds.

But that was just it. He always defended what he loved and that soon ended up being his worst enemy. I came home from a brilliant day from school thinking it was the best day ever and sure enough Simba was waiting for me at the gate. As always I greeted him and I made my way upstairs. Lying down on my bed I began reflecting my day and smiling to myself until I hear a strange noise that sounded like something was choking. Jumping up I look out my bathroom window and my heart dropped whilst my eyes widened in disbelief. There in my backyard were two big dogs with my precious Simba in their jaws. Flinging myself down the stairs I sprinted to the dogs screaming furiously and punching the dogs heads to release my Simba. Once they did Simba turned back around and began attacking a dog that I was having trouble to shoo and the dog turned on him. Snatching him and thrashed him harshly against the tree.

I will never forget you my brave boy. You had a heart like a lion but showed such unconditionally love to anyone that passed you by. Still to this day I will regret never saying goodbye to you personally and bringing you home to bury you. I couldn’t bear to see you like that and i still believed you were alive and well. Please know this – we love you and although tears come to my eyes when I think of you, it is only because of the happy memories between us. You will be missed my boy. Rest peacefully my bud
