He was the cat nobody wanted: Abandoned and left to fend for himself in the apartment community in which I live. I moved in a year ago and it wasn't long before he showed up dirty and near starvation at my patio door. I fed him and he came back, every day. I began to call him "Scout". He allowed me to sit on the patio while he ate and chat with him, but the big orange tabby didn't trust anyone enough to allow a touch. I worked with him and persisted. His trust grew. I truly felt the day was near when he would allow himself to become a permanent part of my home. Oh, such lovely hope! Leash laws exist for a reason, and a young man with a Rottweiler in our apartment community felt he was above those puny laws and his dog viciously attacked and killed Scout, and killed a part of me as well. After all he had been through, to meet such an end is something that will haunt me forever. In the short time Scout graced my life with his visits, he gave me so much and taught me so much about life. I love him and always will. The cat that no one wanted gave me more in such a short time that anyone or anything else in my life ever has. Scout, I'll see you on the other side some day and hope to, for the first time, get to pet your beautiful head.
