| First Born |

He came to us some sixteen years ago, brought by a little girl with a story of abandonment. He seemed like a well mannered youngster on the age of two or three. Upon leaving the domicile to pick the spouse up from work I placed the youngster back outside knowing surely that someone would be looking for him.On the trip home I was telling the spouse that our young neighborhood friend had delivered this youngster to our door and that I had placed him back outside. Lo’ and behold when we pulled into the driveway there he was sitting and seemingly waiting for us. It was at that time that we accepted this youngster into our childless home. As he grew and matured over the years he experienced many wondrous things. While living in Utah he got to experience base jumping without a parachute, falling off of the third floor balcony onto the bushes below, a look of amazement in his eyes as he was brought back to the house. We never let him do that again. He also became an escape artist finding a way through the screen on a second floor balcony climbing down and then when he was ordered home he actually claw-climbed his way back to the balcony and into the house. We didn’t trust screens after that. The things that our first born did for us are immeasurable. His greatest achievement was to be a constant and caring companion for a lonely spouse, abandoned far too often by a husband doing his job. For me, the husband, he became the immediate stress reliever when returning from an arduous trip. A friend that would lay by my side as I sat on the couch questioning my existence and the feeling of, “Is it all worth the sacrifice”. He became my “Coffee Buddy”, our time together every morning that I was home watching the news and feeling his constant purr of contentment as he allowed me rub his chin. Like any first born the years seem to go by to quickly and he was starting to feel his years. Our youngster had become an old man in what seemed to be a blink of an eye. We said goodbye to our first born this morning and felt an emptiness that had not been felt with the passing of our parents, one brother and one sister. Don’t get me wrong we grieved those losses but this was different…Smokey was our first born. Goodbye my son and we will see you in the next life. |
