Our Sweet Sam
Written by Sam K
Our Sam…

Sam was our protector, our friend, and more. Sam would bark like crazy when someone came up to the door, but, as soon as they pet him he was indeed their best friend.

We got Sam when my youngest daughter Chloe was just a tot. She had problems hearing and as a result, wouldn’t talk much. The audiologist recommended a dog, thus, Sam came into our lives. We got him from a rescue center when he was about 3. Chloe would sit for hours on end talking and playing with Sam. People intimidated her, but Sam never judged. The two of them would play dress ups – Chloe would dress him as a ballerina and parade him around the house on his two hind legs – and Sam, well, he just tolerated her. Never yipped, barked or snapped at her.

As Sam got older, he and my oldest daughter Carly became best buds. Both hated thunderstorms so they would huddle in her bed at night, I’m sure both shaking. Sam was Carly’s confident – he heard more of her secrets than anyone else. I’m sure she confided only in Sam about her broken heart when she and her first boyfriend broke up or when one of her friends and she argued. Sam knew more about the drama of her high school years than anyone – and he would listen with the compassion felt only by your best friend.

Sam came down with cancer about 3 years ago, developing a tumor in his throat about the size of an egg. The specialist gave him at most 6 months. But, even that didn’t slow our Sam down. Two years after this first diagnosis, another tumor developed on his side. This grew quite fast – about the size of a soccer ball. Finally, the pain was becoming too much for him to bear. He would eat everything in sight, but the food provided nourishment only for the tumor and he was so very thin. He was constantly uncomfortable, having trouble running, unable to even sleep.

Sam is now with Grandpa and Aunt Kathy waiting patiently for us. We look forward to seeing you again someday… All of our love, forever.
