Scruffy found us just before Christmas 2006. My daughter and I were having a fire drill. As my daughter was practicing going out her bedroom window, in he jumped!
We were so surprised! We thought he was a kitten because he was so tiny, but we would later find out he was two years old. It was freezing outside and I guess the warmth drew him in. He was so skinny and starved. His long hair was filthy and tangled. He was also the worse case of flea ridden I had ever saw, but we loved him instantly and fittingly named him Scruffy.
I feed him right away and after a vigorous feeding he dotted us with affection by continuously rubbing our legs and stroking us with his chin. I then gave him a flea bath and after being blown dry he feel asleep in my arms belly up. He had no ID on and had clearly been abandoned for a while. Some renters a few houses down had recently moved, and I believe they left him behind. So we became his forever home.
Scruffy became more than just a pet to us. He was almost human like. He would always be with us, tagging along like a small child even sleep with us. And he would ask to be picked up by raising his two front paws in the air. Scruffy would also give hugs by putting his paws on both sides of your neck, and sometimes he would gently stroke your cheek with his paw. But my favorite was his Eskimo kisses, he would touch his cute damp nose to mine :)
Scruffy was absolutely amazing, intelligent, and affectionate! But he was different than most cats in some worrying was. He was very undersized, he lacked the ability to purr, and he appears to have asthma like symptoms at times. So we took him to our vet.
He was diagnosed as having asthma. We had to give him pills at first, then shots, and finally the vet put him on a inhaler. But as time went by Scruffy got sicker and sicker.
By the time the vet figured out he had a heart defect it was to late to save him...Scruffy was already dieing. I had to put my best friend, my baby, to sleep on 3-25-08 to end his agony. It was the hardest and saddest day of my life.
Scruffy's been gone now for 6 months and I miss Scruffy so much. But he's still with me...I even have his ashes. He taught me so much about love and the value of life. I will never forget him, and will continue to save stays in his memory.
